Xu Bing - artist that works with text
The presentation on Jenny Holzer reminded me of an artist who also works primarily with text, but in a different way. When I visited the Brooklyn Museum a few weeks ago (see photos attached), I saw this large piece of what looks like Chinese calligraphy on the wall - it caught my attention because I have Chinese calligraphy background so I can recognize the style, and I can fluently read Chinese but could not recognize any of the characters in his work. It turns out he invented his own Chinese characters with each part corresponding to an English alphabet letter, and then he translates English poems (such as Walt Whitman) into Chinese characters. Mind blown!
